Bioenergetics and Redox Reactions

Source: Biology 9 (PCTB), Ch 8, p. 119

📘Easy summary

Bioenergetics is the study of how living organisms acquire, convert, store and utilize energy. Plants capture sunlight; animals consume food; energy is stored in ATP.

In redox reactions electrons are transferred: oxidation = loss of electrons, reduction = gain of electrons. This electron flow generates ATP in respiration and photosynthesis.

⭐Key points

  • Organisms obtain energy from surroundings.
  • ATP is a ready source of energy for growth, movement etc.
  • Redox reactions are fundamental to metabolism.
