Levels of Organization

Source: Biology 9 (PCTB), Ch 5, pp. 79–81

📘Easy summary

Organisms are built on a pattern of increasing complexity. Levels begin with the simplest — the atom — and progress to the most complex — the organism.

Atom → Molecule → Organelle → Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ system → Organism.

⭐Key points

  • Atom: smallest unit of matter that keeps the property of an element (C, H, O).
  • Molecule: atoms combine, e.g. water.
  • Organelle: specialized subcellular part, e.g. mitochondria (respiration), ribosomes (protein synthesis).
  • Cell: smallest unit with characteristics of life.
  • Tissue: group of similar cells performing specific functions (epithelial, muscle, epidermal, vascular).
  • Organ: related tissues working together (heart, lungs, leaves, roots).
  • Organ system: organs with related functions (circulatory, digestive; root and shoot system).
