Modern Periodic Table and Periodicity

Source: Chemistry 9 (PCTB), Ch 8, pp. 105–106

📘Easy summary

The modern periodic table arranges elements in increasing atomic number. Properties repeat at regular intervals — periodicity. Horizontal rows are periods; vertical columns are groups. Along a period electronic configuration changes so properties change gradually; in a group outer configuration is the same so chemical properties are similar.

⭐Key points

  • Mendeleev used atomic masses; Moseley used atomic numbers.
  • E.G. Mazurs collected 700 versions of the periodic table.

💡Exam tip

  • 'Periodic' = repeating after regular intervals.
