Elasticity and Hooke's Law

Source: Physics 9 (PCTB), Ch 6, pp. 128–132

📘Easy summary

A deforming force changes size or shape. Elasticity: property of a solid to regain its original shape and size when the deforming force is removed. Hooke's law: within the elastic limit, extension is directly proportional to the applied force: F = kx, k = spring constant (N m⁻¹). Beyond the elastic limit the body is permanently deformed (not elastic). Extension of a wire ∝ L/A (∝ L/d²). Steel is more elastic than iron and rubber; springs are made of steel. Applications: spring balance, car suspension, weighing machines, mattresses.

⭐Key points

  • Springs in series: extension adds, k decreases.
  • In parallel: load shared, k increases.
