Physical and Non-Physical Quantities

Source: Physics 9 (PCTB), Ch 1, pp. 6–7

📘Easy summary

Quantities that can be measured directly or indirectly with instruments (length with a ruler, time with a clock, temperature with a thermometer) are physical quantities; the laws of physics are expressed through them. Non-physical quantities (love, fear, wisdom, beauty) cannot be measured by instruments; they depend on the observer's perception and are compared qualitatively using criteria, indices or surveys.

⭐Key points

  • Physical: measurable, instrument used, number + unit.
  • Non-physical: not measurable, help analyse behaviour, emotions, social interactions.
  • Colour is treated as a non-physical quantity (MCQ 1.4).
