Respiratory Surface and Air Passages

Source: Biology 11, Ch 10, ch. 10

📘Easy summary

Respiratory surface: site of gas exchange between body and environment; properties — large surface area, thin (one cell), moist, permeable, richly supplied with blood capillaries, ventilated. Path of air: nostrils → nasal cavity (hairs filter dust; mucus traps particles and microbes; ciliated epithelium sweeps them to pharynx; rich blood supply warms; moistens; olfaction) → pharynx → larynx (voice box, glottis, epiglottis) → trachea (C-shaped cartilage rings, ciliated mucous lining) → two bronchi (cartilage plates) → bronchioles (no cartilage, smooth muscle) → terminal and respiratory bronchioles → alveolar ducts → alveoli. Upper tract: nose, nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx, larynx; lower tract: trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs/alveoli.

⭐Key points

  • Alveoli = respiratory surface.
