Enzyme Structure and Active Site

Source: Biology 11, Ch 5, pp. 127–129

📘Easy summary

Enzymes are biological catalysts, mostly globular proteins (some RNA ribozymes), that speed up reactions without being consumed; specific; work in small amounts; sensitive to temperature and pH. Active site: small 3-D pocket/cleft formed by a few amino acids of the folded chain; has binding site (holds substrate by weak bonds — specificity) and catalytic site (amino acid R groups that break/form bonds). Enzyme + substrate → ES complex → enzyme + products.

⭐Key points

  • Specific; reusable.
