📘Easy summary
Polarization is the property of transverse waves by which their vibrations are confined to a single plane (direction). Ordinary (unpolarized) light from the Sun or a bulb has electric field vibrations in all planes perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Only transverse waves can be polarized; so polarization proves that light is a transverse wave. Types: plane (linear) polarization — the electric field vibrates in one plane; circular — the field vector rotates with constant magnitude; elliptical — it rotates while changing magnitude. Light from the sky is partially polarized by scattering.
⭐Key points
- Only transverse waves polarize.
- Linear, circular, elliptical.
- Sky light partially polarized by scattering.
🔬Diagram
🌿Real-life example
Sound cannot be polarized because it is longitudinal.
💡Exam tip
- State: polarization proves the transverse nature of light.
