Measures of Central Tendency

Source: CS 11, Ch 5, 5.1.1

📘Easy summary

Data analytics is examining data to find useful information, patterns and conclusions. Measures of central tendency describe the centre of a data set. Mean (average) = sum of values ÷ number of values. Median = the middle value when data are arranged in order (average of the two middle values for an even count). Mode = the value that occurs most often. Mean is affected by extreme values (outliers); median is not.

⭐Key points

  • Mean = Σx ÷ n.
  • Median = middle of ordered data.
  • Mode = most frequent.
