Breathing, Gaseous Exchange and Respiration

Source: Biology 10, Ch 2, pp. 12–13

📘Easy summary

Breathing (ventilation): physical movements that take air into (inhalation) and out of (exhalation) the lungs. Gaseous exchange: diffusion of O₂ from alveoli into blood and CO₂ from blood into alveoli (and between blood and tissues). Cellular respiration: chemical breakdown of glucose (C–H bonds) inside cells, mainly mitochondria, to release energy (ATP).

⭐Key points

  • Breathing is mechanical; respiration is biochemical.
